「『運命の本』か」 男が、ひくい声でつぶやく。 あかあかと燃える暖炉の火が、闇に沈む男の横顔を照らし出している。 男は仮面をつけている。身にまとったマントは派手で、炎が揺らめくたびに男をピエロのよ うに見せている。それでいてその姿は、古びた英国の書斎に奇妙なほどなじんでいる。 年老いた執事が控えめにせきばらいをし、先をうながすように男を見やる。 仮面の男は静かに語りだす。 「イングランドの西の果てに、不思議な森の民が棲む地、ネバーレイスがある」 執事は小声で復唱する。 「ネバーレイス、ですか」 男はうなずく。 「伝説では、ネバーレイスにはあやかしの森があり、そこに一歩足を踏み入れた者は二度と戻 ってこないという。まるで森に魅入られてしまったがごとくに」 執事は軽く頭を下げる。 「いかにも幼いころから森に慣れ親しみ、それゆえ森の恐ろしさも知る、我が英国民が好みそ うな話かと存じます」 男は仮面の奥で、いたずらっぽく目をまたたかせる。 |
“ The brightly lit and burn(ing) fireplace’s fire, is shining a light on the profile of a man submerge(d) in darkness. The man is wearing a mask. The cloak The butler The masked man recites quietly. “At the west end of England, there is a place (where) curious forest people live, Neverlace.” The butler repeats in a whisper. “Neverlace, is it?” The man nods. “According to legend, in Neverlace there is a suspicious forest, (and) those who treaded one step in it are said to never come back. As if (they) are completely possessed by the forest.” The butler lightly bows (his) head. “Indeed (we) Behind the mask, the man mischievously makes his eye wink. 4 |
「伝説にはまだ先があるんだよ。その森には『運命の本』が隠されている。すべての人間の運 命を知る本が」 執事は悲しげにかぶりを振る。 「あやかしの森なら実際に存在するかと思われますが、運命を知る本となると。さすがにまゆ つばもののような気がいたします」 仮面の男は言う。 「たしかに信じがたい話かもしれない。だが、もしも真実だとしたらどうする？ その本があ れば、すべての人間の運命を左右することができるとしたら」 執事は背筋を伸ばし、威儀を正して言った。 「おそれながら、それは神の御名においてのみ、行われるべきことでございます。だんな様」 デスコールという名の仮面の男は、含み笑いをもらして答えた。 「だからこそ、その本が欲しいのだ。なんとしてもな」 |
“There is more to the legend. In that forest, the Book of Fate is hidden. (It’s) a book which knows the fate of all humans.” The butler shakes his head sadly. “As for the suspicious forest, (it) actually exists it appears but, when it comes to a book (which) knows fate. Naturally (I) feel as though (this is) similar to a dubious tale.” The masked man says. “Surely (it) may be an unbelievable tale. But, supposing it is the truth, what would (one) do in that case? If this book existed, if (one) decided to influence the fate of all humans.” The butler straightens his spine, (and) in a dignified manner corrected (him) and said. “With all due respect, this is in the name of God only, (that it) is something (which) ought to come into use. Master.” The masked man named Descole, answered by leaking a suppressed laugh. “That is exactly why, I want this book. By any means necessary.” 5 |
セントジェームズ教会。 朝の光がステンドグラスから射しこんで、大聖堂を七色に染めている。 パイプオルガンの荘厳な音色と、聖歌隊の澄んだ歌声が聖堂内に響きわたる。 祭壇の正面に立っているのはコリガン神父さん。髪は雪のように白く、バラ色に染まった 福々しい頰をしている。神父さんと向き合っているのは、タキシードに身を包んだ花婿と、真 っ白なウエディングドレス姿の花嫁。 神父さんがおごそかな声で、花嫁にたずねる。 「汝、健やかなるときも病めるときも、この男性を永遠に愛することを誓いますか？」 花嫁が、タキシード姿の男性に顔を向けた。ヴェールに包まれた横顔を見て、ボクは思わず ため息をついた。 「レミさん、きれいです」 グロスキー警部もつぶやいた。 |
St James Church. The morning light is shining through from the stained glass, (and) colouring the cathedral in seven colours. The pipe organ’s solemn timbre and, the choir’s clear singing voices echo within the church. Standing in front of the altar (is) Corrigan Shinpu-san.In the real world, the Japanese word 神父 (shinpu) appears to be a specific term for priests in Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy, translated as the title “Father”; however, Anglicanism/Protestantism would rather use a word such as 牧師. There could be many implications behind the term 神父 being used in the context of a church in England (especially since it is also used in other instances, such as for Father O’Wallin from Phantom Deity). Could it be that, even though Christianism was born somehow in this world, the schism causing the birth of protestantism however did not seem to occur? And does this mean that there was a Laytonverse equivalent of Jesus at some point…? Hair is white like snow, (and he is having) dyed in pink (and) (plump and) happy-looking cheeks. Facing Shinpu-san is, the groom dressed in a tuxedo and, the bride dressed in a pure white wedding dress. Shinpu-san in a solemn voice, asks the bride. “You, both in times of health and in times of sickness, do you vow to love this man for eternity?” The bride, turned her face to the man dressed in a tuxedo. Seeing the profile wrapped in a veil, I unintentionally breathed a sigh. “Remi-san, (you) are beautiful.” Inspector Grosky also murmured. 6 |
「馬子にも衣装だな」 そして花婿となるべき男性が、レミさんの方を向くと······なんとそれはレイトン先生では ないか！ ボクは目を細めて、先生とレミさんの晴れ姿を見つめる。 ボクはルーク。考古学者にして英国一のナゾトキの達人、レイトン先生の押しかけ弟子だ。 少し前のボクは、子供のくせにもうじき世界が終わるなどという、妙な考えに取りつかれて いた。どうせすべては無になるのだと、未来に対してなんの希望も抱けないまま、味気ない 日々を過ごしていた。 そんなとき、ボクの町である事件が起き、それを調べにレイトン先生がやって来た。先生が ナゾトキを駆使してあざやかに事件を解決すると、不思議なことにボクの悩みもきれいさっぱ り消え去っていた。 あの喜びは忘れられない。闇に閉ざされていた世界に光が射しこみ、進むべき道が見えたの だから。 ボクは心に誓った。絶対に先生の弟子になる。そしてボクもナゾトキのすばらしさを多くの 人に広めるんだって。なんといってもナゾトキには、人生を変えてしまうほどのすごい力があ るのだから。 レミさんが、誓いの言葉を唱えようと口を開く。 |
“Anybody can look good with the right clothes indeed.” And then the man (who) ought to be the groom, when (he) turns towards Remi-san…… Believe it or not this is Layton-Sensei, isn’t it?! I look fondly,1. to close one’s eyes partly; to squint I’m Luke. Archaeologist as well as the United Kingdom’s number one puzzle-solving master, Layton-Sensei’s self-proclaimed apprentice. Me from a little while ago, despite (being) a child had become obsessed with strange thoughts such as soon the world (would) come to an end for example. That no matter what everything is in vain,to come to nothing; to be in vain; to lead nowhere invariably cannot hold on to even any kind of hope regarding the future, (I) was passing every day (in a) dull (way). At that time, a case happened in my town, to investigate it Layton-Sensei came around. When Sensei making full use of puzzle-solving brilliantly resolve(d) the incident, mysteriously my sorrows too had been disappearing once and for all. That joy is unforgettable. Light2. illumination; ray; beam; gleam; glow I swore in my heart. (I would) unconditionally become Sensei’s apprentice. Thus I too willused to make invitations, Remi-san, (as a) way to recite the oath’s words, opens her mouth. 7 |
その瞬間、天井からバラバラとステンドグラスが落ちてきた。 「どうしたんだ！」 「何が起きたんだ！」 みなが口々に叫ぶ。 だが、ステンドグラスかと思ったそれは、七色の幾何学模様の布を頭からかぶった、怪しげ な一団だった。 レミさんが短く言い放つ。 「来た！」 レイトン先生が緊張した声で呼びかける。 「レミ、気をつけて！」 花嫁の付添人や、聖歌隊の最前列の数人がスモックを脱ぎ捨て、幾何学模様の一味に飛びか かる。付添人も聖歌隊も、すべて彼らを捕らえるための、警官たちの変装だったのだ。 ボクはこの大捕物にワクワクして叫ぶ。 「作戦成功！ 狙いどおり、わなにかかりましたね！」 レイトン先生がうなずく。 「ああ、だが気を抜くんじゃないよ。どうも彼らはかなりの知恵者のようだ」 レイトン先生の言うとおり、一味は奇妙な武器を持っている。放水銃とでも呼ぶべきか、消 |
That instant, from the ceiling stained glass crashed in pieces. “What’s wrong!?” “What just happened!?” Everyone shouts unanimously. But, that (which I) thought was stained glass, was a suspicious group completely covered with seven-coloured geometric-patterned cloth. Remi-san briefly states firmly. “Incoming!” Layton-Sensei in a tense voice calls out (to her). “Remi, be careful!” The bridesmen and, a few people of the choir’s front row throw off (their) smoking, (and) swoop down on the geometric-patterned gang. Both the attendants and the choir, for the sake of arrest(ing) all of them, were constables in disguise. I to that roundup (of criminals) shout excitedly. “Operation success! According to plan, (they) fell (for it)!” Layton-Sensei nods. “Yes, but don’t lose focus. Somehow they seem to be considerably wise people.” As Layton-Sensei says, the gang are carrying strange weapons. 8 |
防士が使うような太いホースからすごい勢いで水が噴出し、居並ぶ警官たちがはじき飛ばされ る。さらに雨あられと薄い布でできたお手玉のようなものを投げつけてくるが、ぶつかった瞬 間そのお手玉がはじけて、中からたくさんの小さな豆が飛び出す。 「わっ、なんだこれは！」 ビーンズボムだ。バラバラと床にまき散らされた豆に足を取られ、転ぶ警官が続出だ。 グロスキー警部はおたおたしながら叫ぶ。 「おまえたち、なにをしている！ しっかり戦わんか！」 そう言う警部もその豆を踏んでしまい、すてんとひっくり返った。 ボクはその光景を、あんぐりと口を開けて眺めていた。 どういうことなんだ、これは。天下のスコットランドヤードが、妙な幾何学模様の一味に大 苦戦を強いられるだなんて。 屈強な警官たちが、豆で滑って転びまくるという悪夢のような光景を、いったい誰が想像で きただろう。えらいことになってしまった。レイトン先生の言うとおり、敵はそうとう知恵が まわりそうだ。 さらに敵は、筒状のピストン銃で何かをまき散らす。 「うわっ！」 今度は接着剤だ。かなり強力で、一度くっつくとはがれない。 |
Water cannons, (or) what (I) ought to name (this), from thick hoses similar to (those which) firefighters use, with tremendous vigor water erupts, (and) the constables lined up in a row are sent flying. Furthermore (they) throw (at us) like rain a thing (which looks) like a beanbag made out of thin cloth, (and at) the moment of collision those beanbags pop open, from inside lots of tiny peas1. legume (esp. edible legumes or their seeds, such as beans, peas, pulses, etc.); beans; peas “Wah, what’s this!?” It’s a beans bomb. Tripping up on the scattered peas (which were) dispersed and on the floor, falling over constables appear one after the other. Inspector Grosky shouts while flustered. “You all, what are (you) doing!? Fight firmly!” The inspector (who) says that also finishes stepping on those peas, (and) toppled over with a thud.(Often used with ‘to’) A word used to describe the state of people falling or slipping. I open(ed my) mouth (in an) open-mouthed (way) (as I) was gazing at this spectacle. What kind of thing, this is. To think that the world-famous Scotland Yard, is imposed a big hard fight (against) a strange geometric-patterned gang. The nightmarish spectacle of muscular constables, slipping on peas (and) tumbling down over and over again, I wonder who in the world could imagine (it). (This) completely bore fruit to an awful thing. As Layton-Sensei says, the enemy really is considerably quick-witted. Furthermore the enemy, spreads something with a tubular piston gun “Uwah!” This time it’s glue. Considerably powerful, once (it) clings then (it) doesn’t come off. 9 |
「動くな！ 転ぶじゃないか！」 「なにっ、おまえこそ！」 腕を上げたり足をひろげたり、変な格好でくっついてしまった警官たちが、ひとかたまりの ダンゴ状態になりどっと倒れる。 これでまた、戦線を離脱する者が大量に出た。 敵はまるで、チェスで駒を敵陣に進めるみたいに、邪魔な駒をひとつひとつ取り除き、じり じりと近づいてくる。 ヤツらの狙いはひとつ。〝花嫁〟だ。 一歩も退かないように、いかめしい顔つきで最後の砦となりレミさんを守っている、スコッ トランドヤードの精鋭部隊に向け、一味は何かを噴霧した。 「痛い！」 黄色い水煙の中、ボクは目を押さえる。 レイトン先生が叫ぶ。 「ルーク！ すぐに目を閉じるんだ！ 鼻と口もふさいで！」 そう言いながら、ハンカチを渡してくれた。 「黄色い水煙の正体はマスタードだ！」 マスタード！？ |
“Don’t move! (You) will fall over!” “What, you’re the one!” Raising (their) arms (and) spreading around (their) legs, the constables (who had) happened to cling to (each other) in eccentric postures, resulting in a situation (of a) tight crowd (made) of one lump, suddenly fall over. With this again, people (who) withdraw from the front line appeared in large numbers. The enemy is just like, in the same way (as) mov(ing) forward piece(s) into the enemy camp in chess, removing interfering pieces one by one, gradually getting closer. Those guys’ aim is just one. It’s the “bride.” Aiming at Scotland Yard’s elite troop, (who had) become the last stand (which is) defending Remi-san with an imposing expression, wishing to not step back, the gang sprayed something. “Painful!” Inside the yellow spray, I cover my eyes. Layton-Sensei shouts. “Luke! Close (your) eyes at once! Cover (your) mouth and nose too!” While saying this, (he) handed (me) a handkerchief. “The yellow spray’s true form is mustard!” Mustard!? 10 |
なめてもひりひりするけど、目に入ったらこんなに痛いのか！ マスタードスプレーで目鼻を直撃された警官たちは、目を押さえてうめき、床に伏せ、もが き苦しんでいる。 「おまえたち、何をしている。戦うんだ······敵に立ち向かうんだ」 そう言うグロスキー警部も、目を押さえてよろよろしている。 すごい痛みだ。目も鼻ものどもひりつくようで、これでは戦うどころじゃない。 スコットランドヤードがほとんど戦闘能力ゼロになった時点で、七人の幾何学模様が、レミ さんとレイトン先生に正面から向き合った。 ボクは目をしばしばさせながらも、拳を握りしめた。身体は子供だけれど、気持ちはまった く負けてない。ここは先生とレミさんを助けて戦う覚悟だ。 先生は彼らを端からざっと見わたし、ボクに向かって言った。 「ルーク、ここで問題だ！」 ボクは仰天する。 「ええっ！ こんな緊迫した場面でナゾトキですか！」 「重要なことだ。七人の中でひとりだけ幾何学模様のパターンが違う者がいる。それが誰か教 えてくれ。その者こそ一味のボスだ！」 |

Eyes and nose and throat seem to sting, in this situation fight(ing) is out of the question. At a time when Scotland Yard had almost zero combat capability, the seven people in geometric patterns, (they) confronted Remi-san and Layton-Sensei head-on. While forcing (myself) to blink repeatedly, I clenched my fists. Though (my) body (is that of) a child, (my) state of mind (is) not giving in at all. Here is the readiness to rescue Remi-san and Sensei (and) fight. Sensei, taking an extensive view of those guys one after the other briefly, faced (and) said to me: “Luke, here’s a question!” I am taken aback. “Ehh! Puzzle-solving in such strained scene!?” “It’s an important thing. Among the seven people there is only one person (with a) different geometric pattern. Tell for me who that (is). This person definitely is the gang’s boss!” 11 |

「正解！ そいつがボスだ。危ないから相手にするんじゃない！」 先生の言葉どおり、ボスは異様に強い。フェンシングが得意なレイトン先生は燭台を手に 応戦するが、苦戦している。 ボスの肩に燭台が命中した！ 「やった！」 だがボスは意に介したふうもなく、燭台をつかみ、そのまま先生を投げ飛ばした。 「えええ！」 ボクはその光景にあぜんとする。あのレイトン先生が簡単に投げ飛ばされるだなんて。知力 だけでなく腕力も、そんじょそこらの格闘家よりも勝っていると思っていたのに。 ボスは次にレミさんに襲いかかった。 ボクは叫ぶ。 「レミさん！ 得意の手刀をお見舞いしてやってください！」 だが、なぜかレミさんは拳法で応戦しようとせず、あっけないほど簡単に捕まってしまった。 「なんで？」 ボクは信じられない思いで、羽交い締めにされたレミさんを見つめる。 一味のひとりがバズーカ砲のような黒い筒を肩に担ぎ、大聖堂の窓のステンドグラスに向け て発射する。 |
“Correct! That fellow is the boss. Since (he’s) dangerous, don’t take on (him)!” As Sensei stated, the boss is strangely strong. Layton-Sensei (whose) fencing is (his) specialty, fights back with a candlestick in hand, (but he) is having a hard fight. The candlestick made a direct hit (against) the boss’ shoulder! “Yes!” But the boss without the appearance of caring (about it), grab(bed) the candlestick, (and) immediately after hurled Sensei. “Eeeeeh!?” I feel dumbfounded by that spectacle. That Layton-Sensei be flung away easily, (I) can’t believe it. Not only intellectual power but also physical strength, (I) thought that (he) is winning more than an ordinary martial artist, and yet. The boss after that rushed on Remi-san. I shout. “Remi-san! Please punch (him) (with your) best hand-to-hand combat得意 ＝ one’s strong point/forte/specialty But, for some reason Remi-san instead of trying to fight back with martial arts,1. Chinese martial arts; kung fu; wushu; quanfa “What?” I in disbelief, stare at the pinned down羽交い締め ＝ Nelson hold Remi-san. One member of the gang carries on (his) shoulder a bazooka-like black cannon, turns towards the cathedral’s window’s stained glass (and) fires. 14 |
すさまじい音が大聖堂にとどろき、砕け散った本物のステンドグラスがバラバラと落ちてき た。 「危ないぞ！」 「逃げろ！」 逃げまどう参列者たちで、教会は大混乱におちいる。 レミさんを抱えたボスが、ステンドグラスに開いた大穴めがけてロープを投げると、一味全 員がボスにならってロープを投げ、窓枠にガチッと引っかかったロープを、するすると昇って ゆく。 グロスキー警部が警官たちに向かって叫ぶ。 「やつらが逃げるぞ！ おまえたち、転がってないで早く追え！」 ようやくマスタードスプレーのダメージから立ち直った警官たちが、教会の出口めがけて走 りだす。 レイトン先生がボクに声をかける。 「ルーク、大丈夫かい？」 「はい！」 ボクも先生とともに、教会の外に走り出る。 レミさんが連れ去られるなんて、まったくの想定外だ。大変なことになってしまった。一刻 |
A dreadful sound rumbles in the cathedral, (and) the smashed to pieces (and) fallen authentic stained glass collapsed in pieces. “Watch out!” “Run away!” With the attendants (who) run about frantically trying to escape, the church is falling into chaos. When the boss (who) carried Remi-san under (his) arm, throws a rope aiming at the big hole (which) opened up in the stained glass, all members of the gang follow the boss (and) throw ropes, (and with) the ropes (which) got stuck in the window frame with a clanging sound, (they) swiftly continue ascending. Inspector Grosky heads towards the constables and shouts. “They(’re) run(ning) away! You guys, don’t be lying around (and) quickly follow (them)!” The constables (who) finally recovered from the mustard spray’s damage, aim at the church’s exit (and) start running. Layton-Sensei calls out to me. “Luke, are you alright?” “Yes!” I and Sensei together, run out towards outside the church. Such thing as Remi-san being taken away, it’s completely not foreseen. (It) completely became a dreadful thing. 15 |
も早くヤツらを捕まえて、レミさんを取り返さなければ。 一味は、教会の脇にある坂道を全速力で駆け上って行く。あの派手な服のおかげで、どこに いても見失うことはない。 グロスキー警部は喜びの声をあげる。 「しめた！ あっちは行き止まりだ！」 坂の先には高い石壁があり、石壁の前には円形の花壇がある。石壁には穴もなく、指をかけ る突起もないので、とうてい登ることはできない。つまりは完全な行き止まりだ。これでヤツ らを追いつめた形になる。 「やりましたね、先生！」 「ああ。そうだね」 だが、なぜかレイトン先生は心配そうな顔をしている。 花壇の前で立ちすくんでいる一味に向かい、グロスキー警部が大声で呼びかける。 「おまえたちの退路は断たれた！ すみやかに投降しろ！」 やった！ これでヤツらを一網打尽だ。 だが、一味はグロスキー警部の言葉を完全に無視し、次々と花壇の中に姿を消していく。 グロスキー警部は目を丸くする。 「な、なんだ？ 花壇の中はどうなってるんだ？」 |

On the stone wall there are no holes, nor bumps (to) put fingers on, one cannot possibly climb (it). In other words it’s a complete dead end. With this (we) get a way to corner them. “(We) did it, Sensei!” “Yes. That’s right.” But, for some reason Layton-Sensei is making a worried-like expression. Facing the gang (which) is standing in front of a flower bed, Inspector Grosky calls out loudly. “Your path of retreat is severed! Surrender immediately!” Hooray! In the streets of London (which are) lined up (with) buildings (made out of) bricks, horse-drawn vehicles are still going back and forth. Inspector Grosky looks up at the sky and shouts. “Ah! It’s over there!” Over the chimneys of many old houses, a flowerbed-style helicopter is leisurely soaring. This was a strange sight. Such (thing as) a flower bed (which) flies in the sky, (it) has to be a joke.(it) is beyond (what can be accepted as not) a joke A fairly low-altitude flying as well as a lack of speed, (it) might (be) because the occupants are numerous.In that sense, (it) is convenient in order to chase (them). “If it’s the case (we) can still catch up!” In order not to miss (it), I strained my eyes staring at the helicopter (which) continues flying away while (it is) sometimes dropping flowers. “What the heck is that!” “A flower bed is flying in the sky!” People going about in the streets in panic, are pointing at the flower bed (which) flies in the sky. What did (you) do this time!?” Inspector Grosky, peering out of the back window, says. “It’s a sailcloth for the purpose of (making a) parachute. With this the car, like a kite, rises into the sky, that’s the plan.” As stated by the inspector, the car softly floats. 20 |

When it comes to mystery legends about the impossible, curious things (which) are passed down from generation to generation, perhaps (it is) in this way (that they) continue to be created. “It’s going to be alright. Leave it to me!” † Thus began the plan to find and save the brides, using Emmy as a lure. Emmy, here the bride with the initial ‘R,’ was to be married in St James’ Church in a month’s time; though this was a fake wedding, of course. Professor Layton would play the role of the groom. The attendees and choir would actually be Scotland Yard policemen in disguise, in an attempt to round up the thugs we would have lured in. But they were tougher than we thought. St James’ Church was in a terrible state. Shards of stained glass littered the slimy cathedral floor, candelabras were toppled over, and a long vine was overturned, looking like the remains of a tornado that went through it. Inspector Grosky set about searching for evidence while cleaning up the scene. The goal was to find clues in hopes of identifying the members of the gang. I hoped they would find some useful remains amongst this wreckage. Father Corrigan sat down on a bench, slumped his shoulders and said: “Once again, the bride has been taken away.” Professor Layton replied in few words: “Apologies. We did everything we could.” The priest sighed deeply. “I don’t understand. Why are they only targeting our church?” Professor Layton leaned forward. “Father Corrigan, I would like to ask you one question: did anything important disappear from this church today?” “Something important?” “During the wedding ceremony, the brides were wearing a pendant. I saw in the photos of the kidnapped brides that all the women who would get married in this church were wearing the same pendant.” 31 |

The priest flushed for a moment, but then said with a slight stutter: “Yes, that’s the pendant of St Maligra. It is a sacred ornament, said to have been given by His Majesty the King in ancient times, which is normally kept in the church vaults under strict guardianship, but is only loaned to the bride on her wedding day.” Professor Layton mused. “As I thought.” I had no idea what they were talking about, so I asked the professor: “What does it mean?” Professor Layton said: “The objective of that disguised gang was not the bride. Their real purpose was to steal the pendant worn by the bride.” I clapped my hands. “Right! So that’s why they had to attack during their wedding!” Professor Layton nodded. “That’s right. Father Corrigan, how many pendants of St Maligra are there in this church?” “There are five in total.” 32 |

The public library. Faint sounds of pages being turned could be heard between the tall stacks of books. I like the smell and quietness of old books. I like adventure, but I also find it interesting to search through old documents. It was most exciting to dig up the puzzles hidden in the darkness of History, from the space between the page’s lines. Public libraries have a lot of books. Various types of books are gathered from all over the world, but what is strange is that the shelves are not arranged in a uniform way. The books are usually placed facing in a certain direction, but for some reason they were placed randomly, making the large reading room look like a labyrinth. I grumbled. “This is a problem. This makes it hard to get to the books we want. What on Earth are we supposed to do?” “So it is. Luke, The material I want to examine is on the shelves at the far end. Professor Layton called out to Father Corrigan’s back, as he tried to sneak out the back service gate. “Father Corrigan, you’re going out at this hour?” The priest turned his head back against the wall and his eyes widened. I felt a bit uncomfortable, because what was floating there was fear itself. This makes us look like the bad guys. Professor Layton lowers the brim of his silk hat and says quietly: “We have just visited the public library. As a result, since serious questions have arisen, once again, I thought I’d inquire to have a discussion with the priest.” “Ah…” The priest’s eyes turned black and white. “Father Corrigan. Regarding these pendants, they have an even curiouser origin.” Father Corrigan’s story was a strange one. Fifteen years ago. A certain man wandered into this neihbourhood. The man was afflicted with an illness of unknown cause, and because [they] suspected the illness of being contagious because of these symptoms, [they] decided to quarantine him in the church and look after him. “The man was overcome by fever and began his life story. Himself had committed a terrible crime. Hence he had drawn upon himself the wrath of the gods, and was afflicted with an illness.” Professor Layton asks a question. “What was the crime?” “He took sacred treasures out of their proper location without permission. It was treasure that none but the noble families who governed their people were allowed to touch. Because of this, they got stuck with the overflowing of a dreadful disease, and a large number of people died out, he said.” Professor Layton’s eyes light up. 41 |

I always believed that there was a curious divine power inside the pendants.” In any case, the man repented of his sins, and while he murmured incoherently something that sounded like he wanted to apologise to his clan, he drew his last breath. For fear of the infection, they had buried him on a hill on the outskirts of town. If they had tried to examine the cause of death, it may have been a rather trivial illness. ぎっしりと重なりあい、ベルトのように木を取り囲み、そして、次々と消えてゆく。 アストンは、はっと顔をあげた。 「ひょっとして！」 急いで『古代樹』の幹に近づき、がく然としたように叫ぶ。 「なんてことだ！」 「どうしたんです？」 「宙に文字がつづられた瞬間に、タブレットから情報が消えてしまうようです！」 ボクたちは仰天した。 「なんですって！」 全員があわてて幹に近寄ってみる。 幹を見ると、たしかに宙に文字が映し出されたタブレットから、光が消えはじめている。 幹にはめこまれた『運命の本』がまっさらになり、ただの石版になってゆく。 「これは！」 古代からの英知が、『古代樹』が何万年にも渡って蓄えられてきた情報が、次々に消えてゆ く。 「ああ、どうしたらいいんだ！」 アストンは頭を抱えて、うめく。 | 281 |

After the case was over, I returned to Professor Layton’s office in London. After all, this is my old home away from home. Just being amongst the musty archaeological material and old hieroglyphics is calming. Professor Layton and Emmy drink the special blend of tea I brewed for them. Today, I made a chamomile tea that makes my heart feel warm and soothes my tiredness. The incident is over, but I feel like there’s a gaping hole in my heart. Emmy sighs deeply. “Aston… Sania…” I, too, had been feeling down for a while. The most important thing to remember is that you can’t be too careful when it comes to your health and wellbeing. I can’t believe they have been taken in by the Ancient Tree. However much that is the fate of the last prince of Neverlace, it is too sad.
