I wondered what this meant.

Why was the Phantom Deity going around stealing treasures from St Martins Abbey? I honestly had no idea.

Emmy asked Professor Layton:

“Where is St Martins Abbey located?”

Professor Layton replied:

“Birkenstone. It’s a factory town in north-east London. It is a smoky town, lined up with chimneys.”

Birkenstone. It was a town I had not set foot in yet.

Inspector Grosky asked me:

“What treasure is the ‘Last Angel’ at the bottom of this list? It doesn’t look like the Phantom Deity has targeted it yet.”

I was stumped by the question and looked at Professor Layton’s face.

“Actually, I wasn’t really sure either. Say, Professor Layton…”

The moment I called him out, there was a thud on the wall.

“W-what!”

Both Inspector Grosky and Emmy got up from their chairs in a panic.

Looking at the wall, an arrow was stuck in it. At the end of it was a folded piece of paper.

“From outside the window!”

We all rushed to the window in shock.

When I looked outside, a man in black had just come running out of the opposite building.

“Let’s go after them!”

Inspector Grosky opened the door with a bang, as fast as he could say it, and ran out of the room. Emmy said:

“Professor, what do we do? Do we go after them with Inspector Grosky?”

Professor Layton shook his head.

“He probably won’t be able to catch them. The enemy calculated that much, I’m sure.”

Having said this, he walked up to the wall and pulled out the arrow. He pulled out the piece of paper stuck in its end and opened it.

I also looked at the piece of paper from the side and was startled.

“This is…!”

“If you want to know the secret of the ‘Last Angel,’ find Father O’Flynn.”

I shouted:

“Is it from the Phantom Deity again!?”

Professor Layton looked at the piece of paper with a serious expression and muttered:

“No, I don’t think so.”

“Eh!? Then, who could it possibly be!?”

Since the other day, the professor had glimpsed that there was a second enemy, other than the Phantom Deity. By any chance, could this arrow’s notice be from that person?

It was time for the professor to confide in us about what he had understood.

At that moment, Inspector Grosky returned.

“Phew, they got away with it. But this was good exercise!”

Again. That’s Inspector Grosky’s way of saying it. It drove me crazy, even at a time like this.

“I’ve ordered an emergency deployment in Scotland Yard, so there’s still a good chance we’ll find the ruffian. What was on the paper, by the way?”

“Here it is.”

Reading the piece of paper I offered him, Inspector Grosky widened his eyes.

“What, what is this? What is the meaning of this?”

I murmured:

“I don’t know anything about it. It seems that the shooting of the arrow wasn’t the Phantom Deity’s work. I don’t know what’s going on anymore.”

I said this and glanced at Professor Layton’s face.

Emmy asked the professor, slightly irritated:

“Who exactly is Father O’Flynn? Is the monastery involved in the case after all?”

Professor Layton sighed, looked up and said once and for all to answer all our questions:

“Inspector Grosky, let’s go to Scotland Yard.”

“Eh!? What’s going on all of a sudden, Layton?”

“There is someone I’d like to have a word with.”

Professor Layton said this and then fell silent and thoughtful.

When I opened the door to Inspector Grosky’s room, I found Racy Loran. She was sitting in the inspector’s chair, flicking through some papers.

Racy Loran saw us and stopped moving as if she was perturbed.

Inspector Grosky closed in on Racy in disbelief.

“What on Earth are you doing at my desk?”

“Ah, Inspector Grosky. You were away, so they showed me the case file.”

Racy Loran, without a hint of offence, slammed the file of papers closed.

Professor Layton approached the desk and lazily asked her:

“What part of the document were you interested in looking into?”

Racy Loran replied curtly:

“I was shown testimonies from citizens at the last sighting point in each case to find out in which area the Phantom Deity disappeared. From there, I was hoping to determine where he was hiding.”

“Oh. To which area did he disappear?”

Racy Loran shrugged her shoulders and said:

“Roughly speaking, this is north-east of London. I don’t think I am obliged to answer any more questions to a civilian, Professor Layton.”

I was disgusted. She had entered Inspector Groksy’s room, seemed to have been rummaging through the documents without permission, but just because this was about herself, she intended to leave that unquestioned?

“Um? What’s this?”

“I have already received what I wanted.”

Professor Layton looked wide-eyed.

“Excuse me?”

“The ‘Last Angel.’ However, I left it back in its original place. It really is such a curious treasure.”

When he said this and I looked up, there was a person there with a mask over the upper half of his face!

“Descole!”

Everyone groaned loudly. Descole changed instantly and stood quickly, flipping his fancy cloak like he would wear in a circus.

Descole… a masked scientist. He is a nemesis who always appears and stands in the way wherever Professor Layton goes.

I clenched my fists and shouted:

“There you are, Descole! Why are you always hovering around the professor and getting in the way?”

Descole gave a chuckle.

“Would you like to know the answer, Luke, and Professor Layton?”

Professor Layton said in a calm tone.

“Yes, let me hear it.”

“There is a fate between me and you that cannot be undone.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’ll understand sooner or later.”

A smile appeared on his mouth, which was visible under his mask. His smile looked somewhat like Professor Layton’s.

Descole quickly turned around and rushed to the open window.

“I have one prediction. The final battle between you and the Phantom Deity will take place on the Aldebaran.”

“The Aldebaran? What is that all about!?”

In response to my question to Descole, Professor Layton said in a huff:

“The airborne luxury liner Aldebaran?”

I turned around to face Professor Layton.

“An airborne luxury liner, you said!?”

“Yes. In the near future, the government will transport the Last Angel to Paris on the Aldebaran, a luxury liner in the air. They plan to unveil the Last Angel to the public at that time.”

“Father O’Flynn often had doves on his head and shoulders. I guess the doves could see that he was a man of great compassion.”

Professor Layton said:

“In fact, we were looking for Father O’Flynn for a specific purpose. Would it not be possible for us to pay him a visit?”

Sister Janet sounded terribly apologetic.

“Unfortunately, I don’t think you can do that.”

“Why is that?”

“Father O’Flynn came down with a brain disease a year ago, and since then his speech has gone a little… crazy.”

“Gone crazy?”

“The Last Angel!” I exclaimed involuntarily.

Professor Layton asked Sister Janet, in a faintly urgent voice:

Sister Janet said, perplexed:

“Right. If you just want to meet him.”

Professor Layton put his hand on my shoulder and said, with a mysterious look on his face:

“So, Luke, Father O’Flynn is ill, so I shall be the only one to see him here.”

“Ehh, Professor. No way…!”

“In return, I’d like you to check on the pigeons around here.”

I feel like I was just being ordered around, though.

I didn’t have a choice. Let’s just say it’s a good thing that the professor left me with a job to do.

One hour later. Me and Professor Layton were standing in the ruins of St Martins Abbey, west of the ‘Owl Garden.’

The sky is clear, the colour blue is all around.

A total solar eclipse will happen today.

This is the day when a strange phenomenon occurs; the moon hides the sun and it becomes dark around you, like night, even though it is midday.

It is a thrill to be able to watch such an amazing astronomical show from above the clouds with no obstructions. The panoramic 360-degree view in all directions is something you would never be able to see on the ground.

The Phantom Deity has decided to stage their final battle during this total eclipse of the sun!

A week ago, a crime alert arrived from the Phantom Deity. Its contents were…

“Time is short. On board the airborne luxury liner Aldebaran, we will return the ‘Last Angel’ to our hands.”

And the usual symbol. The one where the moon eats the sun.

I looked at the mark of the Phantom Deity and said:

“For the first time, I understand what the sun and moon symbols mean. So this was a total solar eclipse.”

Professor Layton nodded.

“Right. It is a sign of the Phantom Deity’s strong will. That they will fulfil their purpose on the day of the total solar eclipse in 20 years’ time.”

“What do they want?”

Professor Layton looked beyond the sky and murmured:

“Revenge and redemption.”

On this ship was loaded the secret treasure named ‘The Last Angel.’ It was headed to Paris in order to have academic research carried out in detail. The person responsible for the convoy was Mr Lambert, a highly-ranked government official. Upon thinking that he was responsible for the Barkenstone factory explosion, it seemed too well done to be a coincidence.

On our side against the Phantom Deity were Professor Layton, Emmy, myself, Inspector Grosky and others from Scotland Yard.
